"The home country of Eleanor Roosevelt, who sixty years ago played a key role in the adoption of the human rights declaration, has since joined the ranks of Franz Kafka's heroes; and the UK, the birthplace of parliamentary democracy, is flirting with George Orwell's 'Big Brother' state. ... But despite all this human rights remain the only possibility ... for protecting the dignity of man."
