Zakaz publikacji prognoz wyborczych jest niedemokratyczny

4 października w Grecji odbędą się wcześniejsze wybory parlamentarne. Nowa ustawa przewiduje zakaz publikacji sondaży wyborczych w ostatnich dwóch tygodniach kampanii wyborczej. Publicysta Antonis Karkagiannis krytykuje: "Środek ten jest wyjątkowo niedemokratyczny, ponieważ ogranicza on swobodę wypowiedzi i prawo do informacji. W praktyce nie jest to największa słabość tej ustawy. Jest to objaw hipokryzji i chłopskiego sprytu. ... W Grecji wątpi się w naukową dokładność i wiarygodność sondaży. ... Pomijając ich zachodnie słabości ... we wszystkich tamtejszych demokracjach sondaże są środkiem wolności wypowiedzi i informacją skierowaną do społeczeństwa. Żadna władza nie ma prawa tego zakazywać."

Farmers protest in Greece

Greek farmers have blocked roads in the country since Wednesday, and are demanding benefits and tax incentives from the state to counterbalance the low prices they receive for their goods. The Greek government has annouced a 500-million-euro benefit package, which the farmers have rejected. "Who can give us honest information on the problems facing the farmers and the farm industry, ... on how they sell their products domestically and - especially - internationally?" asks the Athens newspaper I Kathimerini. "We've been seeing the same thing for three decades now, under three different governments. The farmers vent their anger and block the nation's motorways with their tractors. ... When something like this happens, especially if elections are approaching, governments are quick to grant the farmers financial support. But in so doing they ignore the structural problems facing farmers and the agricultural industry. It is to be feared that this move will not solve the problem, but merely pass it on to the next government."

Cabinet reshuffle does not mean political change

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis reshuffled his cabinet yesterday, with major changes in the finance portfolio. The daily Ta Nea, which is critical of the government, does not expect much from the move. "Karamanlis has just one goal: halting his party's bad showings in the opinion polls. The prime minister has attempted to correct the most glaring mistakes for which even his own party cadres blame him. ... Sacrificing the Minister of Economy and Finance Georgios Alogoskoufis is doubtless the biggest change in cabinet. It raises many questions however because Karamanlis was in perfect accord with Alogoskoufis' policies, and these will no doubt continue unchanged. ... And that ... is the biggest problem of the cabinet reshuffle: people were changed ... without the slightest indication that policies will change as well. ... This cabinet mix sends no political signal, and merely serves electoral objectives. So we can expect nothing new from the new government."

An anti-Semitic text taken to court in Greece

The trial against Constantin Plevris, a lawyer and neo-Nazi militant who signed an anti-Semitic book ('Jews: the Whole Truth') was resumed on December 3rd. In a previous hearing held in November, his attorney defended the "scientific character" of this work. The journalist Antonis Karkagiannis informs us that "the parts of the 1,400 page book that are contested are notably those explaining that 'the only thing they [Jews] understand is the death squad within 24 hours', or those stating the necessity to bring back the gas chambers. ... These are the ideas of a madman, you will say. But this is not quite so. Anti-Semitism is a form of madness in itself, a hysterical illness which numerous authoritarian regimes including Hitler's have used to justified oppression. ... Plevris has also sent me his book with a note specifying that when speaking about anti-Semitism, I should also refer to the 'other side'. But which side is he talking about? That of hatred, crime, or fanaticism?"
