Eurodeputowana z ramienia Panhelleńskiego Ruchu Socjalistycznego (PASOK) Marilena Koppa wykorzystuje te zdarzenia do krytyki polityki zagranicznej greckiego rządu: "Poczynając od związków rodzinnych [premier Kostas Karamanlis był świadkiem na ślubie córki Recepa Tayyipa Erdoğana] rząd doszedł dziś do punktu, w którym z zakłopotaniem obserwuje turecką ruchliwość w regionie Morza Egejskiego i milczy wobec jasnego zamiaru Turcji, chcącej zachować tam status quo. ... Rząd nie wykorzystał spuścizny z Helsinek [aktu końcowego Konferencji Bezpieczeństwa i Współpracy w Europie z 1975 r.]. Wprost przeciwnie: poprzez zaniedbanie ważnych kwestii, jak np. możliwości odwołania do Hagi, pokazał, że nie zauważył zmian na [międzynarodowej] scenie."

Marilena Koppa, MEP for the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), writes that the comeback of the state has become a necessity: "Today we can no longer talk about economies that are in a transition process because the European social welfare state has developed those structures that were seen as 'old-fashioned' to its own advantage. In fact what remains of the public goods - education, health, insurance - are not the 'burdens of development' but a guarantee for the lifestyle of a Europe that is suffering from a crisis in demand. So the crisis is more about a demand that can't be based on loans, but on income. It's about the income of a market that - as far as employment is concerned - is so unregulated that it can't offer the average worker a better future and thus can't create the conditions that would end the crisis. … So along comes the state and starts buying like a major consumer in order to boost demand. … The comeback of the state first of all means the end of tax havens. The comeback of the state [also] means that every capital trust must be forced into a corner, just as they were in the 1950s. But unlike in the 1950s this does not mean the end of globalisation but rather political control of capital flow."

New tourism

Member of the European Parliament Marilena Koppa is critical of current trends in the country's tourism industry: "The continuous decline in revenues in the tourism industry, which accounts for around 18 percent of the country's economic performance, reflects the fact that in this sector ... there is no quality control of services or infrastructure, no respect for the environment, and above all not a hint of long-term ... planning. ... A vibrant touristic identity must offer quality and alternative solutions. Only in this way can we attract new kinds of tourists and make the Greek touristic product competitive on the international market."
