David Miliband o zagrożeniach na szczycie klimatycznym

Brytyjski minister spraw zagranicznych David Miliband domaga się na łamach polskiej bulwarówki Fakt poważnego podejścia do ochrony klimatu i podjęcia szybkich kroków, mimo innych ważniejszych decyzji: "Świat rozwinięty musi dokonać ambitnych redukcji emisji. Musi też krajom biedniejszym zapewnić środki finansowe i technologie umożliwiające im to samo. Za nieco ponad miesiąc na szczycie ONZ w Kopenhadze podjęte zostaną decyzje, od których zależeć będzie przyszłość naszej planety. Porozumienie w Kopenhadze jest jednak zagrożone, a największym zagrożeniem jest to, że w obliczu priorytetów konkurencyjnych związanych z odbudową gospodarczą, Afganistanem oraz nierozprzestrzenianiem broni jądrowej problem dostrzegamy wówczas, kiedy jest za późno. Dla równowagi rząd brytyjski wraz z kolegami z Francji, Finlandii, Danii i Szwecji rozpoczął nową ofensywę dyplomatyczną. Działamy na czterech frontach."

David Miliband on Europe's leadership in climate issues

British Foreign Minister David Miliband calls on the EU to demonstrate its leadership in solving the climate problem. "Saying that growing uncertainty is unavoidable both in our natural living conditions and in our economy is rash and fatalistic. There is a viable alternative model for the future. By dividing our energy needs among several sources we can avoid a run on resources which would increase our dependency on supplying countries. By building up a low carbon economy we can reduce emissions, lower inflationary pressure, create jobs in the environmental sector and foster sustainable growth. ... The EU will be judged on whether it is able to meet its commitments for the year 2020. Failing to do so would scuttle its claim as a global leader. From the point of view of the economy, the ecology and geopolitics, we can no longer afford our dependency on carbon-based energy. The financial crisis is not an argument for putting off the transition to a low carbon energy economy but another reason for pressing on with it."

Miliband calls for European energy policy

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband calls in the Spanish daily El Mundo for a common European policy aimed at producing a "low-carbon" economy: "In times of economic stagnation it may seem tempting to consider the transformation to a 'low-carbon' economy as a matter of secondary importance. But the truth is that this issue is of essential importance for the future well-being of our economy. In view of rising inflation and high oil and gas prices it is a fact that our dependency on 'carbon-intensive' energy forms adds to our economic difficulties. ... This is why the European Union must engineer a global swing towards a 'low-carbon' economy. ... This institution [the EU], which founded its existence on the basis of cooperation on coal and steel to prevent conflicts and instability in Europe must return to its roots. Today it must use all its instruments ... to create global norms and thus prevent the battle for energy from leading to a conflict not within its borders, but outside them."
