Porsche nibbles away at Volkswagen

The daily Le Monde analyses the internal strife at carmaker Porsche over the takeover of Volkswagen: "Despite the internal war raging at the top levels of both German companies, Porsche continues to nibble away at Volkswagen. The sports car producer has bought five percent of its compatriot's stock. ... Europe's number one in the automobile industry is de facto being turned into a Porsche subsidiary. ... This is an insult for Ferdinand Piëch, who is both chairman of VW's supervisory board and a shareholder in Porsche. ... Yet 71-year-old Piëch is one of the most staunch advocates of a rapprochement with Porsche. ... Mr Piëch nonetheless has problems tolerating the methods employed by Mr Wiedeking [chairman of the board at Porsche], who in Piëch's opinion has gained too much influence. ... But the family dispute is ... just one facet of the battle for power into which the two groups have thrown themselves over the takeover."

Berlin protectionism

Le Monde newspaper analyses the increase of protectionist regulation in Germany: "The rise of protectionism is being borne out in Germany, to the great dismay of the economic milieu. ... Initially it was concern about the growing power of [foreign] state-owned investment funds that prompted Berlin to tighten its legislation. The government wanted to restrain the ambitions of state investors with enormous foreign exchange reserves at their disposal, in particular Russian and Chinese investors, who are suspected of trying to use their stakes to exert political influence or gain control of technical know-how. ... The tone of the major corporations has now changed. A year ago neither Deutsche Bank nor the energy companies Eon and RWE concealed their worry about the appetite of state-owned investment funds. Back then employers supported to a certain extent the protectionist reflex of Germany's policymakers. ... But this harmony is now a thing of the past. The economic milieu is attacking the new regulations and pillorying them as an obstacle to the free movement of capital."

Berlin rejects Sagem

Marie Verges accuses Germany of economic patriotism regarding the sale of German companies. "Berlin is anything but thrilled to see strategically important companies in the hands of foreign investors. But the French company Sagem has little regard for the poorly disguised reservations of the German government. The electronics and telecommunications company has its eye on the Federal Printing Office. The institution that prints banknotes and passports is up for sale. ... Nevertheless, the politicians in charge would prefer a 'national' solution. The case of the Federal Printing Office is symptomatic of the economic patriotism rife in Germany today. Berlin is preparing a law meant to protect German businesses from foreign investors. However, European competition law prevents the German government from officially rejecting Sagem's offer."
