Bulgaria must oppose ethnic violence

Rioting broke out in the Macedonian capital Skopje on Monday evening after five Macedonians were murdered near the city. Although there is still no official information about who carried out the attack, tensions are running high against the country's Albanian minority, members of which are said to be behind the killings. Bulgaria should take a clear stand against ethnic tensions before it's too late, writes the daily Standart: "The atrocious terrorist attack near Skopje could easily be the spark that ignites the powder keg. Especially if the culprits are not found soon. For that reason all Macedonian politicians and statesmen have called for calm and spoken out against ethnic rioting. Worried appeals for peace have also come from Belgrade, Tirana and Pristina. ... The neighbour's house is burning, and it wouldn't be a bad idea at all for Bulgaria's government to speak out clearly against ethnic violence in the region. One look at the situation here at home is enough to see that we too have long been threatened by hatred and violence."

Acta authors lose battle on the Web

Tens of thousands of Internet activists demonstrated worldwide on Saturday against the controversial Anti-Counterfeit Trading Agreement Acta. The resistance to Acta has ushered in a new culture of protest, writes the daily Standart: "First of all, a strikingly large number of 12 to 15-year-olds took part in the demonstrations. They belong to a generation unfamiliar with a world without the Internet, one that mainly inhabits virtual space. They won't accept any interference with their Internet environment, be it from the state or business. For them, there is nothing more natural than downloading a film or song from the web, which is why the issues of copyrights or the theft of intellectual property are alien and incomprehensible to them. Secondly today's youths are increasingly connected through the social networks, and are barely influenced any more by classic media like newspapers, radio and television. The authors of Acta have lost the fight on the virtual battlefield, where information portals, platforms and blogs have called for a peaceful boycott against the US and the EU Commission."

Bułgarskie bomby zszokowały Brukselę

W nocy z poniedziałku na wtorek przed biurami opozycyjnych partii RZS i DSB w Sofii zdetonowano dwie bomby. Dziennik Standart jest zaniepokojony tym, jak odbierze to Bruksela, zwłaszcza że dziś UE przedłoży raport o postępach Bułgarii i Rumunii w kwestii dostosowania wymiaru sprawiedliwości do unijnych standardów: "Fakt, że coś takiego wydarzyło się akurat teraz, pokazuje, że sprawcy chcieli swoimi bombami narobić huku przede wszystkim w Europie. Brukselscy biurokraci nie są w stanie zrozumieć meandrów bułgarskiej polityki. Informacje o zamachach na centrale partii opozycyjnych płyną do nich zazwyczaj z Iraku, Pakistanu i Afganistanu, a nie z krajów członkowskich UE. Z perspektywy zszokowanego Zachodu cała ta sprawa wygląda tak, jakby w Bułgarii zanosiło się na wojnę mafijną między partiami."
