W czwartek na znak protestu przeciwko niskim wynagrodzeniom pracownicy słoweńskiego producenta AGD Gorenje odstąpili od pracy. Otrzymują oni pensje za 32-godzinny tydzień pracy zamiast za 36 godzin. Dziennik Dnevnik ze zrozumieniem pisze o zatrudnionych: "Wydarzenia w pokazowym słoweńskim przedsiębiorstwie Gorenje są symbolem tego, że w Słowenii, będącej rzekomo państwem socjalnym, dzieje się coś bardzo złego, skoro wynagrodzenia w największych fabrykach są głodowe. To, co się stało w Gorenje mogło się już dawno zdarzyć w takich słoweńskich przedsiębiorstwach jak Swaty [producent tarcz szlifierskich], Intereuropa [transport] ... lub w jednym z domów mediowych. Jeżeli menedżerowie pijący w czasach kryzysu drinki w willach w Lubljanie, wierzą, że załoga, która na początku lat 90. poprzedniego stulecia przeżyła już kryzys, również i teraz będzie ich wspierać, to znaczy, że są oni mniej warci niż spinki do mankietów w ich koszulach."

Slovenia at odds with the EU over toll stickers

The introduction this year of semi-annual and annual toll stickers for all cars in Slovenia has met with anger primarily among foreign drivers passing through the country. Now European subsidies for the construction of Slovenian motorways have been frozen, because Brussels is demanding toll stickers for a shorter period of time. Primož Cirman explains in Dnevnik newspaper why Slovenia cannot win against Brussels. "Firstly, because Slovenia went into this 'war' unprepared. The toll stickers were introduced hastily, and no studies were carried out on the consequences of the stickers on public finances. And we also acted without the support of the lobby in Brussels, which in the worst case would have 'bought' us one or two years' reprieve. ... Secondly, the experience of the EU member states shows that the European Commission is not in the habit of giving in on questions of road charges. ... Thirdly, by the time proceedings in the European Court of Justice came to an end Slovenia could suffer major damage. What should the new government do? In the long term, it should come up with a strategy for road charges that is valid for more than half a year."

New tanks for the Slovenian army

The Slovenian defence minister yesterday concluded a deal with the Finnish company Patria for the purchase of 135 tanks for the Slovenian army. Primoz Cirman speculates on how the estimated 280 million euros the tanks will cost could have been better spent. "That amount of money could have financed job schemes for Slovenia's unemployed for around four years, covered the costs of humanitarian organisations for 15 years, or been used to set up free child care facilities or hospitals... The tanks are intended for use in NATO operations abroad. Malicious tongues might now be tempted to remind politicians that before the referendum on NATO membership they promised that membership would not only boost the country's security but also bring financial rewards."
