The Galileo project is far from exemplary
The French economist Elie Cohen regrets the numerous obstacles hindering the European satellite navigation system Galileo. "What lessons can be drawn from this long gestation period for a project that so wanted to be exemplary ? Concerning European construction, which is supposed to lead the way with concrete projects creating economic growth, it now has to be recognised that it took over five years to reach a common position while EU spending was around 2.5 billion euros. As an economic project, the results are especially grim. European industrialists are indeed to benefit from subventions, public markets, are to master new technology, but they are not engaging in the reality of the market or a business plan. Galileo is thus more a technological platform financed with public funds than it is an industrial project.”

The slowing of European growth
"It has been 20 years since Europe stopped closing the gap with the United States in terms of per capita wealth," the French economist Elie Cohen, co-author of a report entitled 'Economy policy and growth in Europe', published in Documentation Française, says in an interview led by Sabine Delanglade. "For the past 10 years, while Europe appeared to be making progress, with the single market, the euro, enlargement, etc., it was, in fact, getting nowhere. Prices are no longer uniform and trade among member states is stagnating. ... Due to a failure to clearly define the debates, and to take firm positions, we have seen a rise in national particularism over the past 10 years by countries busy naval-gazing at their own specificities. ... I believe Europe will only regain credibility if it offers a credible prospect for growth."
