Russia masters the carrot and the stick
Jean-Marie Colombani writes in the daily El País on the danger Europe faces of breaking up into East and West, and warns that Russia could take advantage of the situation: "As is well known, Russia is not only good at wielding the stick - for example in turning off the gas tap. It is also very handy with the carrot when it sees the possibility of dissociating from the European Union former satellite states which may feel the economic attraction of a new-born Russia."

Strengthen the social market economy
El País newspaper argues for strengthening the social market economy in Europe. "With the support of the Eurozone and the European Central Bank, the European Union has a double advantage. First of all it is not at the origin of the crisis, which shows that its market is better regulated. And secondly - even if this may sound insulting to British ears - it has its own model. We have heard Angela Merkel refer to the social market economy, a concept better suited to Europe than the unregulated market. ... Especially in these times when the role of the state and the redefinition of social democracy are gaining ground, Europe should follow the call to bolster the social market economy. And we need have no complexes vis-à-vis Anglo-American finance capitalism, whose collapse we are all now bearing the brunt of."

A slimmed-down EU presidency
Jean-Marie Colombani, former editor in chief of Le Monde newspaper, analyses expectations for the French EU Council presidency, which begins in July: "Nicolas Sarkozy is taking the matter very much to heart and began with great enthusiasm. After the successful renegotiation of the constitution text, which became the Treaty of Lisbon, everything pointed to a very intense French presidency which could allow the EU to get back on its feet. But as the date draws closer it is becoming clear that French ambitions are waning. ... Sarkozy's idealism is increasingly making way for realism. France will have to be content with acting on three fronts: immigration, energy and the environment. And that is only if the Irish reef can be circumvented. Because if the no side prevails in the referendum on the Treaty, no one knows what will be in store for Europe."

Jean-Marie Colombani on European identity
Jean-Marie Colombani, chief-editor of the daily, regrets that the candidates in the French Presidential election campaign are "competing in modesty", each as timid as the other about Europe, but are now "preoccupied by national identity". "As if this did not have everything to gain from a European project! As if History had not taught us that a project such as Europe is impossible to separate from France's identity! Following the road to European identity will further guarantee French identity. There is no model, not yet, but there are already, from Brest to Budapest, the basic foundations of a civilisation of solidarity. And there is a dialogue facing the power of Chinese and American forceful empires The nation remains, as most Europeans wish, the main framework for democratic expression and for the modelling of the national 'model'. But the Union is already the only framework that allows these nations any hope of handling the major questions before us."
