José Saramago keeps a critical eye on Portugal
In December 2007 the health of 85-year-old Portuguese writer and Nobel literature laureate, Jose Saramago, took a critical turn for the worse. He now feels much better and attended in Lisbon the opening of an exhibition devoted to him on April 23rd. In an interview with Juan Cruz he emphasises the ties which bind him to his country. "I am very critical about Portugal's social and political situation. I believe that people's morale is very low, as if they had given up on the future. We are far too sheep-like. But it is my country. A few years ago I was asked what kind of relationship I had with my country. I answered: 'Iike what this country has made me.' It is not the most beautiful, or the cleverest, or the most inventive country, but it is my country. ... Basically, the question is very simple: I can criticise Portugal and, at the same time, wonder who I would be if I hadn't been born here."

Doris Lessing compares IRA terrorism to September 11th
In an interview conducted by Juan Cruz, the British novelist Doris Lessing, this year's Nobel Prize winner for literature, considers IRA terrorism. "People forget that the IRA made attacks on our government, that it killed several people during a conservative party conference where the Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher was present. People forget. The 11th of September was terrible, but if we look back on the history of the IRA, what happened to the Americans is not as bad. Any American will say I'm crazy. Many people died, important buildings were tumbled, but it wasn't as terrible or extraordinary as some people believe; such people are either naïve or pretending to be."

Madrid theatre forced towithdraw a play from its program.
A lively polemic has broken out in Spain after the thunderous declarations of the actor and director Pepe Rubianes who expressed offensive opinions on the unity of Spain. A victim of threats, he has decided to suspend the play 'Eran todos Lorca', the premiere of which was scheduled for September 19th at the Spanish Theatre of Madrid. Mario Gas, director of this theatre, spoke about this affair in an interview conducted by Juan Cruz. "We are observing an attack against freedom of expression which should be remembered in this country so that it is not repeated. ... Every time a show cannot be presented, freedom is in danger. The judges and courts can of course resolve this sort of problem. It is however necessary, in the mean time, for things to be carried out normally and in a civilised manner, conforming to the freedom that is our due. We can debate, talk - the most important word -, instead of threatening."
