Pope responds to bishops

In a letter addressed to all Catholic bishops Pope Benedict XVI has defended the decision to reincommunicate the four bishop members of the Society of St. Pius X. The conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes: "Considering the reactions among the majority of Catholics in Germany and France it would be to gravely misjudge the relation between cause and effect if the most recent criticisms were to be seen as simply the result of an unforeseeable 'failure'. The German bishops have noted that all is not well with the institutional structure of the Church - and above all the relations between the Pope and bishops and between the global and local Church. The long overdue integration of the 'Ecclesia Dei' commission into the Vatican congregation won't do much to alter this. Given the current state of the Curia and the significance of the reintegration of the Pius society it will take more than good will, more Internet and a few organisational makeovers to remedy the situation."

The Pope has harmed the Church

The conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung comments on the worldwide protests sparked by Pope Benedict XVI's rehabilitation of the four traditionalist bishops: "In addition to rehabilitating a Holocaust denier - which should never have happened - Pope Benedict has offered full membership in the Church to bishops who themselves admit they do not adhere to the fundamentals of Church doctrine, and who lead a movement that rejects the basic tenets of democratic societies. The damage to the Church in general and to the Papacy in particular is immeasurable."

The WYD generation

The conservative daily the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung comments on how the World Youth Day (WYD) has changed over the past ten years: "Rome, Toronto, Cologne and now Sydney stand not only for superlatives but for a rhythm of alternating ecstasy and daily routine that now allows us to speak of a 'WYD generation' that spans the entire world and embraces millions. This generation is united by a consciousness fundamentally different from that of the 1968 generation and their children. Its horizons are determined not by the constraining and alarming factor of the Cold War and competing views of the world ..., but instead by a world without boundaries in every sense of the word, in which globalisation and the accelerated [pace of life] that goes with it overcome all boundaries. ... In this world without restraints the Catholic Church's claim to be not just an organisation but an institution is increasingly proving to be a constraining, indeed increasingly resistant element. For precisely that reason it is in accord with the hopes of people living in the North and in the South for justice, peace and the preservation of the Creation."

The Pope's perilous visit to Turkey

From the Vatican's point of view, Pope Benedikt XVI's vist to Turkey is an attempt to narrow the rift between the Roman Catholic and the orthodox churches. The German-born Cardinal Walter Kasper, who works in the Curia, explains in an interview with Daniel Deckers: "It has been five hundred years since the last meeting between a Pope and an ecumenical patriarch... This visit is intended to send the message that the church of the East and the church of the West have decided to continue on the path towards reconciliation and achieve complete harmony. The conflicts of the globalised world are forcing Christians closer together, but they are also discovering the things they have in common with Islam and the secularised world. The rapprochement between the churches of the East and the West can also serve to promote the integration of Eastern and Western Europe."
