The Romanian James Joyce
Sebastian Fasthuber is delighted that readers outside Romania are now discovering the novel 'Orbitor' by Romanian author Mircea Cartarescu. "In his 500-page book the Romanian author draws on glimpses of life at his parents' home and other rousing childhood images to paint a moving portrait of Bucharest under Ceausescu's dictatorship. Cartarescu has done for Bucharest what James Joyce did for Dublin: created a literary monument to his home city. Admittedly, the portrayal delivered by 'Orbitor' is not a condescendingly realistic one. It warms the reader's heart with its surreal stories suffused with magic realism set in a city full of promise, possibilities and danger. ... Deep down this extravagant novel, in which a New Orleans voodoo priest, hungry for victims, stretches out his tentacles to Bucharest and the apocalypse never seems far away, rests on a strangely solid foundation. Ultimately it all comes down to the eternal battle between dark and light, devils and angels or, as the hobby entomologist Cartarescu would say, 'between the spider and the butterfly'."

Ilija Trojanov on Europe's complex identity
Bulgarian-born author, Ilija Trojanov, who has lived in many different countries and is currently lecturing in Vienna, criticises the equation of the EU with Europe: "The EU has taken it upon itself to create a European identity. This is absurd. No one in their right mind would doubt that for example Ukraine is part of Europe's identity. The attempts to define European tradition as a Christian tradition are also humbug. To give just one example: the western part of Europe, namely Spain, was not only predominantly Islamic for 800 years, but was also unusually multicultural in a positive sense and was characterised by a religious tolerance we can only dream of today. In terms of its identity, Europe is much more diverse and complex than current political discussion allows."

Colum McCann on fiction and responsibility
Irish author Colum McCann tells Sebastian Fasthuber about the disappearing lines between fiction and truth, and about his novel "Zoli," whose heroine is a Romany poet. "You always hear: Write what you know. When I came to the USA from Ireland a good 20 years ago, I wanted to become a writer. So I rode my bicycle through all the states of the union for a year and a half to get some experience. And I got the experience. But I haven't written about it to this very day. Instead, I put myself into others' shoes. Why? I probably feel a kind of responsibility to give voice to rarely or seldom told stories. There are so many millions of Romany, but so few good stories that have been recorded. And particularly few about Romany women... But it's not only about the Romany people. For me, it is essentially a story about how the individual stands up to the powers that be."
