European reason

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung draws a positive balance of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to France: "Seldom has there been as much unity in Paris between the dynamic Sarkozy and the smart Benedict. This has been a rare meeting between a French president obliged by the constitution to a strict separation of church and state and a Pope who must hold to the word of the Bible, yet who may interpret it as he sees fit. ... In the three and a half years of his pontificate, Benedict XVI has gone about his rallying work in a calm and patient manner, eager not to leave the field of reason solely to modern proponents of the Enlightenment. ... In this way, the intellectual at the Holy See revealed the folly of the prominent French laicists, former presidents and much vaunted professors who will hear nothing of the Christian roots of Europe. ... And in the end he made a bid for a return to the well-proven Christian foundation of European values, where one may find better and more human treasures than in any other culture. In all Christian modesty, of course."

Italy gets interim government

Heinz-Joachim Fischer writes about the rifts in Italy: "What Italy needs now is not so much a new electoral law as a government that grapples with all the grievances that have piled up over the years like the mountains of trash in Naples. For example, the fact that Italians are increasingly living in poverty - the National Bank recently determined that wages are stagnating, purchasing power is dropping, families are sinking into debt. ... That the Mafia, often in alliance with politicians, has insinuated itself into the state health care service, especially in southern Italy. And overall, that idle talk is preferred over serious business in public affairs. The last time Italy was called to order was when it entered the European Monetary Union. Europe won't be able to sit passively by if only the northern part of Italy remains in the EU. Rome had better get serious."

Italy

If they win a third of the electorate, the 'Democrats' could become the strongest party and form a solid foundation for a left-wing government, writes Heinz-Joachim Fischer. However he adds that the accusations of 'Malgoverne', bad government, continue. "Prodi can't afford to lean back and relax. The nation is growing increasingly impatient with the country's politics. Since Prodi forced the introduction of the European Monetary Union and got it for virtually nothing back in 1997, the Italian economic and political elite has achieved very little - no reforms and hardly any new political initiatives - under either Berlusconi or Prodi. ... Dissatisfaction with the country's leaders is making itself felt in the opinion polls, where Prodi, politicians in general, and also the economic pressure groups are performing terribly."
