Kraje strefy euro uzależniły dalsze kredyty na rzecz pomocy dla Grecji od rygorystycznej polityki oszczędnościowej. Zdaniem dziennika Adevărul sytuacja jest wyjątkowo poważna: "Unoszące się nad Grecją widmo bankructwa i wymykającej się spod kontroli rewolty wydaje się być bardziej złowieszcze niż miecz Damoklesa, który swego czasu zawisł nad tyranem Syrakuz. ... Nikt nie wie, czy siła greckiej gospodarki pozwoli na spłatę ogromnych długów. W tej chwili najbardziej liczy się jednak znalezienie natychmiastowego rozwiązania, które umożliwiłoby dalsze funkcjonowanie kraju. ... Premier Papandreu rozpaczliwie próbuje ugrać trochę czasu, poddając pod głosowanie parlamentu wotum zaufania i uchwalając nowe środki służące oszczędnościom. Jednocześnie stara się zapobiec wybuchowi niepokojów społecznych. Apeluje o znalezienie narodowego konsensusu i obiecuje przeprowadzenie jesienią referendum, w którym spyta społeczeństwo, czy akceptuje ono daleko idące reformy. Premier zdaje sobie sprawę, że Greków czeka kilka chudych lat."

Monica Lovinescu - a free Romanian voice

Literary critic Monica Lovinescu has died in Paris at the age of 85. She was a legend in Romania, best known for her programmes which were broadcast on Radio Free Europe. Dinu Flamand recalls: "Monica Lovinescu spoke to Romanians over distant microphones and yet she was very close to them. One could picture her sitting somewhere in Paris, but just as easily sitting in the next room. She was an angel of revenge against all the grey, all the lies that one had to live with. My grandfather would tune in to her broadcasts in the middle of the village where he lived in Transylvania and turn up the volume high so that everyone could hear. Since those days, since I was a child, I have known her voice. Her wonderfully free spirit lived in her voice. There wasn't a false note in it - no opportunity for bad compromises or just making do - there was no vacillation."

Acclaim for Romanian director Mungiu in France

The Paris-based Romanian writer Dinu Flamand writes about the success of Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu's film "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days", which won this year's Palme d'Or at Cannes and is currently showing at French cinemas. "Mungiu raises issues like: Why do we make films? What purpose does art serve? His film about a tragic but commonplace abortion in socialist Romania is a simple story with the intensity of a Greek tragedy. Everyone admires the blend of symbols in the film. It uses the language of lives lived in fear and reconstructs the social atmosphere in Romania at the time, yet avoids the pitfalls of a pure portrayal of a people's misery. And in doing so it makes the West aware of how its neighbours lived in hell for decades."
