A w polskiej polityce, gdy samolot wpada w korkociąg, nie dochodzi do przekazania sterów innemu pilotowi, lecz ta sama załoga próbuje odzyskać sterowność."

Polish politician taken into custody by German police

The daily Dzienik criticises the Munich police, who took Polish politician Jan Rokita into custody after he and his wife got into an argument with a flight attendant because they didn't want to sit in the seats they had been allocated: "Jan Rokita has been treated like a common troublemaker. … But the most surprising thing about this incident is that it happened in a member state of the EU, which purports to champion the cause of free and liberal solutions. In the conflict between Lufthansa and its passengers I am firmly on Mr and Mrs Rokita's side. It's clear to me that Rokita did not pose a danger to passenger safety in this situation. Initially the whole thing looked like a joke but I'm sure none of us would want to be in their position. We know this couple and we know what to expect of them, and that certainly doesn't include them threatening someone. Jan Rokita is well-known for being a cultivated person with principles."

Poland's ex-Prime Minister Leszek Miller changes sides

Former Polish Prime Minister and Social Democrat Leszek Miller (2001-2003) has resigned from his party, the SLD. He announced that in the upcoming parliamentary elections he will lend his support to Samoobrona (Self-Defence), the populist farmers' party led by Andrzej Lepper. Television journalist Dorota Gawryluk comments on this surprise move: "Miller wants to prove at any cost that he hasn't gone into political retirement. He's looking for a place - it doesn't matter where - from which he can show his SLD colleagues that he still has some clout. He perceives it as a personal injury - not without reason - when people blame him for all the failures of the SLD. ... But if you want to be active in politics you have to learn to dispense with emotional identification. Ultimately all that counts is whether you're in on the game or not."

Praise for the school uniform

Poland is introducing the compulsory use of school uniforms as of September 3, the first day of the new school year. TV journalist Dorota Gawryluk hopes this will mark a return to increased discipline at schools. She says that the compulsory school uniforms could only be criticised by journalists "who have never faced the problem of a child who's crying because one of his classmates wears better trousers or shoes. Uniforms don't just solve practical problems, they also promote education. They are a first step towards reintroducing normality in schools. The liberal approach to education which spurns fixed rules and principles and which has become popular at schools has proved a failure."
