Ryszard Kapuscinski's secret-service past
The Polish weekly Newsweek Polska has revealed that the renowned Polish writer and journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski, who died last January, wrote reports for the Polish communist secret police in the 1960s and 1970s. However according to the files kept by the Polish Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) Kapuscinski's activities for the secret service while working as a foreign correspondent never brought anyone to harm. "The collaboration of a journalist with the secret services - particularly those of an undemocratic state - can never be regarded as a virtue. In the People's Republic of Poland such collaboration, when not undertaken for ideological reasons, was the result of blackmail, weakness, ambition, conformism and historical and political fatalism. This was almost certainly the case with Kapuscinski... It's just a shame that in the ten years he lived in a free Poland he never made the decision to talk about it openly and explain his motives."

Günter Grass was in the Waffen-SS
Krzysztof Gottesmann draws parallels between Günter Grass and those who once worked for the Polish state security service, noting that confronting the past is a difficult process on both sides of the German-Polish border. "The Poles and the Germans experienced the two greatest cataclysms of the 20th century: communism and National Socialism… Even today both nations are having difficulties dealing with their past. Confronting the dark side of history, of one's shame, personal responsibility and mistakes, and how individuals were implicated in the events, is an important task for a nation… It has taken Grass, who has become the conscience of many Germans, over 60 years to talk openly about his past – to confess and assume responsibility for his actions. Does this damage his credibility? The answer is yes, because you can't separate the work of an artist from the creator and his life."

Apprehension about Poland's new government
The newspaper says people shouldn't make fun of the supporters of Samoobrona leader Andrzej Lepper and the League of Polish Families (LPR), as was the case at a demonstration staged by supporters of the Liberal Democratic Party on Friday. Mocking Mr. Lepper's farming background, demonstrators tuned up with straw in their shoes, among other things. "You don't have to sympathise with the activities and views of Andrzej Lepper (Samoobrona) or Roman Giertych (the League of Polish Families), but you shouldn't make fun of the people who support them. They have been disappointed in the past and have turned their backs on the 'Democratic Union' and the 'Freedom Union'. They're not in the mood for jokes. We shouldn't make fun of them, not only because it's petty and impolite, but also because it's bad for Poland as it only increases support for the populists."

Charges against Jaruzelski
The past has caught up with former Polish President General Wojciech Jaruzelski, who imposed martial law on the country in 1981, not once but twice. Poland's Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) wants to have General Jaruzelski put on trial for imposing martial law. Meanwhile, current President Lech Kaczynski (an anti-communist) has announced that he had been "mistaken" in giving General Jaruzelski the "Cross of deportees to Siberia". General Juruzelski reacted by quickly giving back the medal. Krzysztof Gottesmann comments: "Jaruzelski is leaving the political stage as a loser. People are awarded the controversial "Cross of deportees to Siberia" to honour their martyrdom and their loyalty to the ideals of freedom and independence. There can be no doubt that Jaruzelski suffered in Siberia and lost his father there, but he shouldn't be honoured for great deeds in the name of freedom and independence."

Jaroslaw Kaczynski's war on the media
The dispute between the new government and Rzeczpospolita has entered its second round. Krzysztof Gottesmann reacts critically to the March 3 comments made by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, chairman of the Polish governing party Law and Justice (PiS), to the effect that the freedom of word and expression was in the hands of a group of publishers and media owners. "Gottesmann accuses him of starting a "war on the media", and goes on to say that Kaczynski is guilty of the "sin of forgetting". "It's the media – including Rzeczpospolita – that has taken on the task of pointing to corruption, abuse of power and the omnipresence of the secret services. It was the media that paved the way for the Kaczynski brothers' rise to power. They didn't do this to take their share in the spoils of the political victory, but for the good of the nation. For these reasons, we can't accept the things Jaroslaw Kaczynski is saying and doing now. This is not the way to a democratic Poland."
