Organised against racism?

Reflecting on a series of racially motivated attacks against immigrants in Italy, the daily La Repubblica notes a change in attitude among the country's immigrants. "The passiveness has come to an end. The immigrants are no longer willing to suffer the violence in silence. ... In Italy the trouble spots are not confined to the suburbs as in France, but are spread all over the country. Both socially and geographically, Italy is one big banlieue. But the most recent incidents show that - despite the inexcusable attempts [of politicians] to justify the crimes - the present climate is not entirely dominated by bitter and unrelenting [racial] conflict. Among second-generation immigrants there is a growing conviction that Italy too needs an SOS racism organisation based on the French model which works to eliminate discrimination; a comprehensive organisation tasked with facilitating and guaranteeing integration. This is a solution that requires political allies and is therefore problematic in today's Italy, where emphasising the differences of immigrants rather than espousing their integration is a sure way of achieving election victories."

Olmert to resign

Following Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's announcement of resignation amidst allegations of corruption, the daily La Repubblica describes the problems facing the country once he leaves office: "Aside from the personal fate of the prime minister, which is now in the hands of the judges, there is also the danger that the negotiations with the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) could be put on ice and that the likelihood of an attack against Iran will increase. It is no coincidence that one of the potential successors, Shaul Mofaz, one of the hawks of the [ruling] Kadima Party, immediately declared he would block any hypothesis of an agreement with the Palestinians. Mofaz also takes a critical view of the ceasefire with Hamas. The election of current Foreign Minister Tizpi Livni, on the other hand, could lead to the formation of a majority government made up of the Labor Party and Likud. This is a solution that comes up in Israel every time internal instability or armed conflict threaten the political system. Both Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu, the so-called Russian party, have been calling for a tougher stance on Ramallah and Gaza as well as Teheran. Much depends ... on the results of the primary elections and the decisions of the Labor Party."

The expulsion of criminal Romanian Roma from Italy

Facing the expulsion orders against EU citizens considered dangerous, the Italian journalist Renzo Guolo stresses the importance of defining a process allowing the "construction of a realistic supranational policy of migration within and beyond Europe. This is the last remaining opportunity to resolve the problem. Beyond this perspective, there is only impotent demagogy and a scenario where city outskirts and river banks, far form useless political quarrelling, will see make-shift shanty towns multiply along with bulldozer raids".

Europe's return to grace

Thanks to its geographical situation, Italy has a role to play, provided it does not disperse itself: it can stand for a bridge between the European Union and the Middle-East, believes Renzo Guolo, journalist and writer specialising in Islam. "The mission in Lebanon, the intense diplomatic activity in the Israel-Palestine conflict, the desire to take part in the 5+1 group dealing with the nuclear issue in Iran, the new interest in Egypt hinging North Africa and the Middle-East and being a key country in the future of this region. ... Italy is rediscovering the Mediterranean and the Middle East as key places in its foreign policy and national security. Our country is at the crossing of old and new conflicts, fundamentalism, mass migration and the possible proliferation of nuclear weapons. ... In order to practice a peaceable policy, dialogue is necessary, along with a distribution of roles and duties with the other European countries."

Italian military convoy attacked in Iraq

One soldier was killed and four injured, one critically, in a bomb attack on an Italian military convoy that was escorting British troops to Nassiriya, in southern Iraq. The attack comes at the moment when Romano Prodi, following up on an election promise, is preparing to withdraw half of Italy's troops. For sociologist Renzo Guolo, the Italians' position in Iraq is no longer tenable. "Italy is paying a heavy price for the mission in Iraq, a mission that the government has decided to terminate but which, in a country spiraling out of control, continues to pose considerable risks to our soldiers. ... Iraqi groups do not make a distinction between countries. Between those who are staying on and those who are preparing to leave. Between the United States and the United Kingdom on the one hand, and Italy on the other."
