Jaruzelski on trial

As one of the last dictators of the Warsaw-Pact states Wojciech Jaruzelski, former leader of the Polish United Workers' Party (the former Polish Communist Party), is currently on trial in Poland. A debate has flared up about whether the trial serves any purpose. Among others Lech Wałęsa, leader of the former Solidarność trade union, believes it is a pure act of revenge initiated by victims of political persecution at the time. The daily Dagens Nyheter also sees no reason for a trial: "Jaruzelski's motivations [for his policies back then] and the possible alternatives are naturally interesting, but this is a matter that should be left to historians, not a court. The former, however, are unlikely to reach agreement about the twists of history, and the motives of historical figures are seldom clear. But one thing is for sure: it is a bad sign when history becomes part of party political struggles, because that only distracts from the real problems."

New conflicts in Kosovo

In the ethnically divided city of Mitrovica in northern Kosovo, violent clashes broke out between Serbs and UN policemen and soldiers of the Kosovo Force (KFOR). Barbro Hedvall comments: "The nationalist forces have been bolstered by the developments in Kosovo. It looks very much like the government that will come to power in May [in Serbia] following the parliamentary elections will give the 'Serbian issue' high priority. ... One major problem is that both the UN and the EU are perceived as opponents of the Serbs and as an extension of Pristina's power. This was highlighted by the clashes. ... The Kosovo issue is turning into a battle with Europe on one side and Serbia and Russia on the other."

Sweden should let Germany win

In view of the positive impact Germany's football fever is having on its economy and its willingness to accept reform, columnist Barbro Hedvall wonders whether it wouldn't perhaps be better if Sweden let Germany win on Saturday. Although Swedish football fans would be disappointed, he points out that all Swedish citizens would profit from the effects of a European upswing initiated in Germany: "We Europeans love football and are good at it, but only very few can live from it. We must adapt to new players and new rules not just for football but also for the economy and the labour market."
