The threat of war in Northern Iraq

Roland Heine writes that the conflict with the PKK in Northern Iraq is highlighting the rift between former allies Turkey and the US. "One asks oneself what will happen when US and Turkish troops come up against each other. ... The new Turkish elites no longer see their country as a NATO outpost, but as a regional power with independent economic and political interests regarding their neighbouring states. Confrontations with Syria or Iran are counterproductive for Ankara: Syria is vital as a transit country for Turkish exports to Arab states and Iran is a large market directly on Turkey's doorstep widely regarded as a partner in the battle against Kurdish separatism. The US is obviously having difficulties accepting the new situation."

Russian bombers to resume long-range patrols

Roland Heine notes that Vladimir Putin's argument about protecting Russian security "unfortunately" makes sense. "It's true that the US has never renounced a comparable amount of its military potential. Its worldwide network of military bases provides it with unrivalled strategic advantages. And one only need recall the foreign-policy premises which prompted Russia's decision to end the flights in 1992. At the time leading NATO representatives and countless influential Western politicians assured Moscow that NATO would not expand to the east... And now what has happened? NATO has broken its promise and advanced to Russia's very borders, and Moscow is naturally wondering why. Bush Junior treats the UN at best like a US service provider and important weapons control deals have either been cancelled, gone unratified or been circumvented by Washington. Under the circumstances it could only be a matter of time before Russia ordered its bombers to resume their flights."

Bulgaria's run-off vote

According to commentator Roland Heine, Bulgaria's head of state Georgi Parvanov, who claims his victory in the first round of the presidential elections is a "categorical decision" in favour of EU membership, has severely misjudged the situation: "Parvanov won 64 percent of the vote and can be secure in the knowledge that he will win the run-off vote against the far-right nationalist Volon Siderov. However, the major aspect of this election was that 58 percent – or almost two-thirds – of those eligible to vote in Bulgaria abstained. If you translate that into concrete figures it means that just around a quarter of the electorate voted in favour of Paravanov's EU-oriented course. This is not a categorical decision in favour of Europe but rather a demonstration of rejection. Moreover, if Parvanov wasn't so fixated on his own chances of staying in power he would be deeply disturbed by the extent of this election boycott. Because you can't just shrug off the poor turnout with the excuse that people are weary of politics. This is the nation's way of showing its disapproval of the corrupt political elite."

The EU and the Iranian question

Roland Heine is worried about an escalation in the conflict with Iran over nuclear power: "What happened this summer in Lebanon was a preliminary war for the planned offensive against Iran... But now a western-dominated international force, including German soldiers, is to be stationed in Lebanon or on its borders as a buffer between Israel and the Hizbullah. If the USA goes to war against Iran and the Hizbullah reacts accordingly, the units from the German Armed Forces will inevitably be used to protect Israel – which means they will be drawn into the war. It takes very little imagination to work out the likely consequences. Given the way the war would escalate, it would probably be almost impossible to withdraw the German troops, especially if the conflict comes to a head... The way the German government is ignoring the obvious connection between the Lebanon crisis and the Iran crisis is distinctly odd.”
