Liberalny dziennik Mladá Fronta Dnes opublikował analizę, z której wynika, że w czasach kryzysu ludzie mają gorszy seks, są sfrustrowani i beznamiętni: "Pytani naukowcy twierdzą jednocześnie, że w czasach boomu gospodarczego ludzie także nie myśleli o seksie, ponieważ musieli martwić się o swoje interesy. Przypomina to trochę skargi rolników, którzy w takim samym stopniu obawiają się suszy, co ulewnych opadów. Wcześniej mówiono, że seks jest rozrywką dla biednych - jest super i nic nie kosztuje. Dziś nie doświadczamy kryzysu życia seksualnego, a kryzysu życia rozrywkowego. Nie umiemy się już bawić. Jesteśmy pokoleniem, które niespodziewanego braku w dostawie prądu nie wykorzystuje do spontanicznych łóżkowych zabaw. Dzwonimy raczej do elektrowni i wydzieramy się. Kochamy tak, jak żyjemy. Na to wpływ mamy tylko my."

Jan Jandourek on Czech nostalgia

The Czech Republic commemorated on Monday the 19th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution which put an end to the communist regime of the CSSR. Jan Jandurek reflects in the liberal daily Mladá fronta DNES on the current surveys in which many Czechs have expressed feelings of nostalgia for the communist era. "People are now saying that all was not bad under commusnism. True, there was no unemployment in the forced labour camps, for example. ... Often we strike everything unpleasant from our memory, especially since we know that everything turned out well in the end. But we also know that a political prisoner who toiled in the uranium mines does not have much reason for nostalgia, because history lives on inside him. Practically none of the crimes committed by the Communists have been avenged. And yet they destroyed so much: institutions, schools, political parties, associations, small and mid-sized businesses and private farms, all of which were the bearers of historical memory. Physical liquidation and deportation also had a role in interrupting continuity and effacing tradition. ... No, just like on the Titanic, all was not bad in the CSSR. But all in all it was quite a catastrophe."

The Czech affinity for winter revolutions

Jan Jandourek elaborates on a Czech phenomenon: revolutionary events always took place in the colder seasons. "As yet, no one has investigated the influence of weather on our history. For example, it was winter 1918 when Czechoslovakia was born, and there was the February putsch of 1948, and the fall of communism in 1989. Charter 77 was enacted on 1 January 1977. ... Why are Czechs always inclined toward revolution when they could be sitting comfortably at home near their toasty ovens instead? We'll never see that day. But actually, given global climate warming, it might be fair to say the world should not expect any revolutionary developments from the Czechs for the foreseeable future."

Late penance for Stalinist show trial

A Czech court has sentence 86-year-old Ludmila Brozova-Polednova to eight years in prison for serving as a judge in what was one of the most sensational Stalinist show trials in Prague in 1950. Back then the former resistance fighter and democrat parliamentarian Milada Horakova was condemned to death for alleged high treason. Owing to bad health, it's unlikely that Brozova-Polednova will ever have to serve her sentence. "Nonetheless," writes Jan Jandourek, "it's good that the judgement was delivered. This way at least it can't be said that no one has been condemned for these crimes. This attempt to establish justice to a certain extent has come very late, but this is by no means unique to the Czech Republic. Many of Hitler's helpers fled de-Nazification and went on to lead pleasant lives in East and West Germany. The same goes for Italy, Spain, Chile and Russia. During a bloodless transition from dictatorship to democracy, many predators slip through the net. This is why it's all the more crucial to repeatedly draw attention to their crimes."

Renewed dispute over the St. Vitus Catheral in Prague

A new round has begun in the long dispute over the ownership of Prague's famous St. Vitus Cathedral. The Supreme Court has overturned a decision by Prague's municipal court according to which it belongs to the Catholic Church, ruling that the cathedral belongs to "all the people of Czechoslovakia," as the Communist Party stipulated in 1954. Jan Jandourek comments: "This may seem honourable, but only until you realise what it really means. In fact it's nothing more and nothing less than robbery. To argue that no one protested when the communists registered their robbery in the land register is absurd. Who would have had the courage to kick up a fuss in the 1950s ? The bishops were all in prison, and those who were free had no desire to end up behind bars."
