Clear signals against German austerity policy

The government in the Netherlands fell on Monday because right-wing populists refused to accept EU austerity measures, while in the French presidential elections the right-wing extremist Marine Le Pen won almost 20 percent of the vote in the first round. These are clear signs that people reject Germany's austerity policy, the left-liberal daily Le Monde contends: "If not even the model pupils are able to apply the Eurozone's budgetary measures without causing a government crisis, then who can? ... The next few days will be decisive for Europe. The citizens are expressing their frustration and fear of the cuts that budgetary discipline entails in a reasonable way: through political channels. In a way Ms. Merkel is right: Europe is all about domestic politics nowadays. But the message sent by her fellow European citizens, first and foremost the French, doesn't tally with her ideas. They are signalling their rejection of the German crisis management model which puts austerity before stimulating economic growth."

Oburzeni potrzebują perspektyw

Protesty Oburzonych w Hiszpanii i Grecji nie ustają. Należy zadbać o lepszą integrację młodzieży w społeczeństwie, domaga się lewicowo-liberalny dziennik Le Monde: "Podobnie jak w świecie arabskim tu także mamy do czynienia ze spontanicznymi ruchami bez przywódców. Jednak w odróżnieniu od ich arabskich przyjaciół 'oburzeni' Grecy i Hiszpanie nie tyle kwestionują sam system rządów, co sposób jego funkcjonowania. Nie chcą go zniszczyć. Chcą jedynie, by zakończyło się ich wykluczenie. Ruch Puerta del Sol nie mówi o powstaniu czy rewolucji. Jego hasło brzmi: 'Democracia Real, Ya' (Prawdziwa demokracja, natychmiast). W Hiszpanii połowa młodych ludzi jest bez pracy. Wyjątku nie stanowią już nawet osoby z wyższym wykształceniem. ... Tej młodzieży, pozbawionej perspektyw na poprawę stopy życiowej, trzeba dać przynajmniej perspektywę zmian na płaszczyźnie politycznej. To wielkie wyzwanie dla Europy, borykającej się już z innymi bolączkami: swym starzejącym się społeczeństwem i niewydolnymi systemami rządów."

Sylvie Kauffmann considers that women in politics these days are different in their approach to power from women in the 80s and 90s. "A big new factor in compared to the previous generation, is that powerful women of the 21st century act as such, brandishing their femininity, making their cultural baggage an advantage rather than a handicap. Who could forget the blond braids crowning the head of the former Ukranian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko ? Today's women define themselves as 'mothers' when this is the case, and even 'grand-mothers' in the United States, where they are often a step ahead. ... They often seek to make room for other women and thus to secure freshly obtained power, which was far from the interests of Golda Meir or Margaret Thatcher. Exceptions in a man's world those two did not consider it a priority to enlarge the feminine circle, for they had enough on their plate simply imposing themselves."
