Benoît Poelvoorde cannot see the divison of Belgium
In an interview conducted by Philippe Manche and Bernard Demonty, the Belgian actor Benoît Poelvoorde defends the unity of his country, which has been going through a political crisis for more than five months. "When you film two fools tearing up a Belgian flag, it's only two fools. It isn't the entire Flemish community. Not all Flemish people tear up Belgian flags. The problem is that if you put two people burning a flag on the front page, all the Walloons stand there, bound to say, 'I have a feeling we're not so appreciated in the Flanders region'. ... It's important to fight to get across the message that our country also thrives on this sort of fragility of two communities obliged to respect one another. ... I am convinced that Belgium will not split, because citizens will eventually have their say again."

A European opera pays homage to a lost civilisation
"However unthinkable this may seem, more frequent in the Amazon or in Papua New Guinea, several hundreds of people lived in complete and enforced autarky for thousands of years in Europe, right up until 1830. In Europe? Yes! But far, very far away. Between northern Scotland and Iceland. In St Kilda, an island 64 kilometres away from the nearest coast", explains Philippe Manche. "The life of these provides the plot line for 'St Kilda, Island of the Birdmen', an opera and musical show to be presented this Friday June 22nd and Saturday 23rd in six towns: Mons (Belgium), Valenciennes (France), Düsseldorf (Germany), Hallstatt (Austria), Glasgow and Stornway. ... The audience in Mons will see what is happening in Düsseldorf while spectators in Stornway will be able to appreciate images in Valenciennes, and so on and so forth. This will no doubt be one of the first shows where ubiquity is neither fantasy, nor virtual."

Punk's fighting spirit
"Punk, it was predicted, would be as short-lived as its songs. Thirty years later, punk is spunky as ever," observes the journalist Philippe Manche. "More ubiquitous today than ever before - and not just in music - the punk spirit sparked off the two most significant musical movements of the past 20 years: hip-hop and electronic music. No need to have a bachelor's degree in musicology from the University of Berkeley to rap samples of soul and funk. The same goes for electro. Using laptops, a few brilliant amateurs concoct their music in their garages, before making a splash on the clubbing circuit."
