Crisis of government in Italy

In an interview with Gerhard Mumelter, Stefano Folli, former editor in chief of the Corriere della Sera, expresses his doubts that a grand coalition is the solution to the current crisis in Italy: "This would have been more feasible immediately after the elections than it is now. After all, the elections did produce two blocks of almost equal strength. Now the left would regard a grand coalition as a defeat. I don't think that would be a solution. A more promising alternative is an institutional government under the Chairman of the Senate that agrees on a few points of policy and whose term in office is limited to a year… But the main thing now is to pass new electoral laws. Without laws preventing the fragmentation of the political constellation and ensuring political change with reasonable majorities, new elections are pointless."

Violence in Italian football

"It's like it always has been in Italy. Laws are made to be sidestepped," Gerhard Murmelter comments, irritated. "A law passed in June 2005 aimed at curbing violence in football stadiums was not implemented - thanks to the active support of precisely those clubs that always complain about the violence on television. The big clean-up campaign in Italian football, which began with the forced relegation of record champion Juventus Turin, got lost in all the excitement of Italy's World Cup victory. Did the sullied demi-gods not absolve themselves and the nation of all blame and prove to the uneasy Tifosi that ailing Italian football was alive and kicking? Wasn't the captain of Squadra Azzurra, Fabio Cannavaro, even voted the world's best football player? The victorious World Cup coach, Marcello Lippi, now says he's 'disoriented'. But at least following the horrific scenes at Catania he has come up with an interesting proposal: 'Perhaps the teams should buy themselves soldiers instead of strikers in future.'"
