Repeal the ex-prime minister's immunity
According to the EU Commission's progress report the Romanian parliament is blocking several major corruption investigations, including the prosecution of former prime minister Adrian Nastase. His immunity as a member of parliament must be repealed, writes the daily Cotidianul: "We have one major problem to be solved: the immunity of Adrian Nastase. As long as he ... is allowed to give lessons in procedure to Prosecutor-General Laura Codruta Kövesi ... his case will hang like a heavy millstone over Romania's image in the EU. The only way to avoid the humiliating observation of the judiciary by the EU is ... for the members of parliament to treat Nastase like any other citizen in legal matters. The judges of the High Court of Cassation and Justice must now be more discreet in their movements. They must judge, and not delay the investigations."

Ex-nomenklatura immune to investigation
The Romanian senate decided this week that the former nomenklatura of the Romanian Communist Party is immune to investigation by the CNSAS, the authority responsible for reviewing Securitate files. Cotidianul newspaper is outraged: "The senate, the chamber responsible for decision-making in the Romanian parliament, has passed a bill on the CNSAS that runs counter to all logic and common sense and which ignores the suffering endured by Romanians for half a century. ... For example, the CNSAS would now attest that [former communist President] Nicolae Ceauşescu did not collaborate with the Securitate, although the repression was a direct result of his personal instructions. Everyone with even a vague knowledge of the recent past knows that the Securitate did not act on its own initiative but closely followed the instructions of the communist nomenklatura. ... It would be hard to imagine a more blatant 'not guilty' verdict for the decision-makers of that criminal regime."

Romanian justice minister fears bloggers
Since the beginning of his term in office the new Romanian Justice Minister Tudor Chiuariu has been under attack because of the procedures employed for advertising posts in his ministry. The minister had access blocked to a blog in which young judges commented on the procedures. Dorin Petrisor comments: "Many judges, in particular the younger ones, use the internet to divulge their views. They use blogs to comment on the sleazy side of the Romanian judiciary and expose dirty dealings within the ministry of justice. One of these judges described in his blog irregularities in the way the ministry advertises open posts. He pointed to conflicts of interest and demonstrated how the minister had modified the regulations for advertising posts to establish his own rules. It was nothing less than an indictment of the fatuousness with which the judiciary is administrated."
