Austria commemorates 1938
"Austria, since the end of the Second World War, continues to have the hardest time coming to terms with this dark period of its history. [For the commemoration of the Anschluss], however, the Austrian government has really tried to put an emphasis on the 'repentance' of a people for their active collaboration with the 3rd Reich, and the elimination of their elites. Despite these good intentions, the heart, apparently, is lacking", writes Maurin Picard, Vienna correspondent for the paper. "Is this because '60% of Austrians didn't live through the war' as Vienna's mayor Michael Haupl claims? Or because bringing up those hard times is still difficult for most people? ... For Austrian authorities, regularly accused of dragging their heels in paying reparations to Nazism's victims, and of letting known war criminals live in peace, the road to 'repentance' is still a long one."

Austrian army recruits two imams
"A quiet revolution is under way in devoutly Catholic Austria. In March the Austrian army will appoint two imams to watch over its young Muslim recruits," writes Maurin Picard, the daily's Vienna correspondent. "The idea was first aired in 2006, but in the wake of fierce debate within the army it has taken two years to put in place the controversial measure [announced on Sunday January 13th]. ... With over 1,000 soldiers, or 3.5 % of the armed forces, of Muslim obedience, Islam is now the second largest religion in the military institution, ahead of protestantism. ... Contrary to the received ideas put about by Austria's far right, it is not the first time that the army has incorporated Muslims in its ranks. With the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, whole units of soldiers from the province of Bosnia - annexed after a brief war - were freely able to practice their faith."

Austria's confrontation with its past
"He embodied Austria's bad conscience. A multi-faceted, sulphurous character, a Nazi officer turned UN Secretary-General and Head of State ...", writes Maurin Picard, the daily's correspondent in Austria, concerning the death of Kurt Waldheim. "Since retiring in 1992, Waldheim had kept a low profile. In an autobiography entitled 'The Answer', published four years later, he recognised that he had 'made a mistake' by concealing his service record, but denied just as vigorously having participated the deportation of thousands of Greek Jews from Thessaloniki Port, where he had been posted. Better still, he considered that the scandal around his case had given rise to a 'healthy public debate' on the Austrians' attitude under the Nazi regime leading to a real, albeit late awareness."

Hungary's political crisis
Journalist Maurin Pincard comments on the situation in Hungary: "Ferenz Gyurcsány, who his adversaries refer to as a dilettante, knows that the major difficulties have yet to come. ... . Over a few years, the former 'dragon' of Eastern Europe has seen its status change from that of envied teacher's pet in the infant European class to that of a country under perfusion, incapable of reaching a budgetary balance. ... Despite his doubts, Ferenc Gyurcsány, an obstinate man, seems to be climbing back up the opinion polls with 30 % of public opinion in his favour, having fallen so low in September and October."

Nuclear safety in question
"Western Europeans countries used to worry primarily about the antiquity of Eastern Europe's nuclear reactors. But since the fall of the iron curtain power stations in former Eastern bloc countries have been modernised and upgraded to EU safety standards thanks to the know-how of Western contractors. In the 1990s the American company Westinghouse undertook the renovation of the Soviet-designed WER 100 pressurized water reactors at the Temelin plant, adding, for example, complete physical containment. That has not, however, prevented the Temelin plant in South Bohemia [Czech Republic] from showing a 'serious failing'," writes Maurin Picard. And in the wake of the incident at the end of July at Sweden's Forsmark plant "the European nuclear safety debate is once again an issue."
