Can Europe ensure its defence on its own ?
In a commentary, Austrian military expert Erich Reiter explains the vehemence of Vladimir Putin's reaction to the US missile defence system: "In reality Russia is no longer a superpower; it's just a huge country with enormous problems whose economic boom is based on raw material exports rather than modern technology. Its population is shrinking and its once vast military power is crumbling. The only claim it has to being a superpower is its strategic nuclear arsenal. In this respect it has already de facto lost its equal standing with the US. But it's still capable of retaliating. And it may be able to maintain this capability for some time - if it weren't for the construction of the missile defence shield. This is why Russia will go to any lengths to prevent this happening. In particular it will try to undermine the resolution of the US's new allies, its former vassals in Eastern Europe."

The origins of Euroscepticism
Erich Reiter, expert for security policies at the ministry of defense, analyses the reasons for Euroscepticism. "The major mistake was that eastward expansion came far too soon and resulted in a more heterogeneous European Union, which people find harder to identify with. The other mistake was the arrogance of its 25 heads of state and government, who are responsible for making decisions of fundamental importance. Their approach to conducting EU policy resembles an enlightened form of absolutism: everything for the people, but nothing with them, because they wouldn't understand it (which, unfortunately, is often the case)... The name of the game now is 'everyone against the EU', as if the EU was something other than the sum of its members. The EU is precisely what its members make of it, and at present, they're not making anything good out of it."
