Mykola Rjabtschuk warns Poland about Russia
In an interview with Filip Memches, Mykola Riabchuk, a Ukrainian writer and editor-in-chief of the Kiev-based monthly Krytyka, warns the Polish government not to pin its hopes on an improvement in relations with Russia. "I don't believe there will be a thaw in Polish-Russian relations, simply because it wouldn't be in Russia's interest. Russia needs Poland in the role of the rebel who can be punished while the rest of the world looks on. Poland is to play the same role among the countries of the former Eastern Bloc as Ukraine did among the former Soviet republics. ... The problem lies in the nature of Polish-Russian relations. Russian politicians take their business partners in Western Europe seriously because it's in their interest to do so. Poland is superfluous in this constellation. Moscow doesn't need friends in its former zone of influence; it needs countries that it can humiliate."

Mykola Rjabtschuk on his fears regarding the Schengen Agreement
On 1 January 2008, Poland and other states of Central Europe will join the Schengen zone, making border controls between these countries and Western Europe unnecessary. As a Ukrainian citizen, poet Mykola Rjabtschuk contemplates the move with a mixture of fear and hope. "For the first time in many years - or perhaps even decades - I was startled to find the Ukrainian-Slovak-Hungarian border crossing post at Cop completely empty... I became angry. Yet again they're trying to keep us out and barricade themselves off from Ukraine - that amorphous and politically schizophrenic entity in the East. Now we would really find out how distant those foreign countries are that once seemed so near... But it turned out that I was mistaken. I needed to make an urgent call to Kiev. I asked the cashier why all the telephones had disappeared from the walls. It's was being renovated. That's why everything had been taken away, she explained. My fears were calmed for the time being."

The lessons of Chernobyl
Ukrainian essayist Mykola Riabchuk says it would be a mistake to make new investments in nuclear power: "It's not the disaster itself, but rather the way the authorities handled this case that had a shocking and disturbing effect on people. Everywhere in the Soviet Union, and especially in Ukraine, the citizens' political awareness grew. However, in a way that was fatal as much as it was predictable, the political aspect of the problem forced the philosophical aspect, namely how far man can go in his research and manipulation of substances, genes, and psyches without overstepping the red line of self-destruction, into the background... It may be naive to expect the international energy economy to respect moral principles, or to hope that the frenzied consumerism will ever come to an end. Yet at the same time 20 years after Chernobyl the time has come to recollect the lessons to be learned from this disaster."
