Politics on the pitch
Gabriele Romagnoli looks into the political dimensions of the upcoming EURO 2008 quarter finals between Spain and Italy. "The football pitch is in all aspects an extension of the rivalry between the two countries: Spain's superior GDP, the intervention (and fascination) of Zapatero. ... The last [Spanish victory] took place on September 2, 1920, and much has happened in the meantime. For a long time Spain was Italy's poor cousin. Italy sent generous help during the Spanish Civil War. ... Today everything is different. Everything the Spanish do, they do better than the Italians. When they shift to the right, they become the darlings of the right wing. Bush may like Berlusconi, but before he marched into Iraq it was Aznar he met up with. When they shift to the left, they become the idols of the Italian Left, who cry 'Viva Zapataro'. It is uncertain whether Italy can beat every team,as [Italian trainer] Donadoni contends. But what is certain is that - in football - Spain can lose against Italy with a clear conscience."

Rome's airport is hell for passengers
On Monday, August 6th, the national Italian agency for civil aviation (ENAC) launched an inquiry into Rome's Fiumicino airport, in order to find why there has been so much chaos in the baggage halls these past few days. "You may well be terrified when landing, for the most onerous part of journey is about to begin", quips Gabriele Romagnoli. "When you travel in the north of Europe, or in Asia, the delivery of baggage is as punctual as a train time table. If something goes wrong, someone is sacked, or else does a hara-kiri for the dishonour. ... Here, on home turf, it is different. There is a growing feeling of shared resignation and general negligence. Year after year, delays and abuse fuel the infernal circle faced by passengers. Fiumicino is the first thing you see when arriving in Italy. It bares a close resemblance to the rest of the country."

Catholic missionarys in Second Life?
Gabriele Romagnoli considers the proposition of the Jesuit magazine 'Civita Cattolica' to send missionaries into the virtual universe Second Life. "At the end of the day, it is a form of preaching, adapted to modern times. ... If God is omnipresent, why shouldn't those who act in his name down here be omnipresent too? ... And yet, for those of us who are not men and women of the church, something is amiss. What? That the new can be combined with the old, web with the 'verbum', is a sign of open-mindedness. It may be blasphemy, but the avatar is what most resembles the soul. ... What bothers us is the term 'missionary'. It brings to mind someone like Mother Teresa. ... It may not be necessary to cross a continent to meet someone, but at least a road. One click is hardly a sacrifice."
