A new gallery of religous art in Cologne

Architecture critic Steve Rose is awestruck by Cologne's new Kolumba art museum. "Churches have stood on this site, in the middle of Cologne's medieval centre, since Roman times. ... Kolumba is not your run-of-the-mill culture palace. It was commissioned by the Catholic archdiocese of Cologne, which owns a magnificent collection of religious art. It was a bold undertaking, for which the church needed the best. So it hired Peter Zumthor. ... The result is serene yet stimulating. In fact, so seamlessly executed is the whole that, at times, it's hard to separate the building and the art. ... If anything, there's too much to worship here: the art, God, history, the city beyond, the architecture, and, by extension, the mighty Zumthor himself. The architect's presence has been covered up so smoothly, it becomes almost strangely conspicuous. He's invisible but overarching, much like a god."

Steve Rose on the Freedom Tower

"So what will the new Freedom Tower be like?", inquires Steve Rose, the daily's architecture columnist with regard to the project, that will be built by David Childs. "A foretaste has been provided just across the road, where 7 World Trade Centre opened a few months ago. This sleek, 52-storey office tower was also designed by Childs, and replaces the third, smaller tower that collapsed on 9/11. Beyond being a prototype for the Freedom Tower, 7 World Trade Centre could point the way for a new generation of tall buildings. It contains a host of sustainable design innovations, but it is also one of the most terrorism-proof buildings in the world. Our landscape has been transformed, post-9/11, by barriers, x-ray machines, screening facilities - the apparatus of counter-terrorism. The fact that architects today are wrestling with how to incorporate this into designs is difficult to couch in positive terms. ... Efforts have at least been made at Ground Zero to offset the new architecture-against-terror with friendly improvements to the urban fabric."

Calatrava, an architectural genius

Steve Rose hails the work of the Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava. "With the new Opera House of Valencia, it is appropriate to speak of a 'Gaudí effect'. This seductive new building, designed by one of the world's most famous architects, could do for Spain's third city what Frank Gehry's Guggenhiem did for Bilbao. (...) And in the same way that Gaudí's curvilinear works are synonymous with Barcelona, Calatrava's designs could become a real asset for Valencia. (...) It is not to exaggerate to declare that Calatrava is a genius. But are we talking about an architectonic genius? The only reservations that one might be able to have regarding his talent concern his way of thinking, which resembled that of a mathematician. It is often said that his genius is  more about clever architectural design than adaptation to everyday use. And it is not surprising that his most beautiful achievements are bridges."
