Ang Lee wins the Golden Lion

Tadeusz Sobolewski points out that there were many star-studded English-language films on the programme in Venice that really had no need of festival support. "The commercialisation of the competition was a strategic move by festival director [Marco Müller] now that the future of the festival in Venice is uncertain because of the competition coming from Rome. The top prize in the Rome competition would provide enough funding for a new film and that's a great temptation for producers and directors. On top of that there's the new festival in Turin, organised by independent director and producer Nanni Moretti. A war between the festivals is raging in Italy. [Festival boss] Müller needed the Hollywood stars on board to satisfy the appetite of his sponsor's and attract media interest."

Ken Loach's film about 21st century slavery

'It's a free world', British director Ken Loach's new film about the exploitation of immigrants from Eastern Europe in London, received enthusiastic reviews at the Mostra film festival in Venice, writes Tadeusz Sobolewski. But he doubts that the Polish reaction will be as positive given that the film dispels the positive myths about the Polish wave of emigration. "You seldom talk of degradation. Who's willing to admit to such a thing? The people Loach features in his film don't chat in Internet forums. We see how they live crammed together in caravans in illegal settlements. These are not film sets - they actually exist... Loach and [scriptwriter Paul] Laverty have destroyed the triumphant image of the Polish emigrant by showing the flip side of the coin: the sickness of a system whose economy - and particularly its service sector - is thriving thanks an influx of guest workers who are often illegally exploited... This is what slavery looks like in the 21st century. And it's here too."

On the path to European films

In an interview the Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska tells film critic Tadeusz Sobolewski why she gave German actress Julia Jentsch the leading role in her new film "33 Scenes from Life", which was made in Poland: "Why should we let language limit our choices ? Thanks to the European actors the film has a chance to attract foreign audiences... For me the main thing is that our film receives as much attention as possible, so why should one barricade oneself off with borders, language or nationalities ? People talk of Polish cinema - we make Polish cinema, they say, and they like it to be about our heroic history and our suffering. But I want Poland to be seen as part of Europe and not as a strange, exotic country. We come closer to this idea with a film in which Polish actors act alongside German and Danish actors."

A politically correct Berlinale

The best films are rarely those that win the prizes at film festivals, writes film critic Tadeusz Sobolewski on this year's Berlinale. "The prizes go to ambitious debutants or exotic cinematography instead. This time the Berlin festival, which generally champions the causes of courage and freedom, played it safe. 'Tuya's Marriage' is standard Chinese fare: the simple life, refined beauty, a tribute to brave women and rural pragmatism." According to Sobolewski, it would have been much more courageous to give the prize to a central European film like Jiri Menzel's "I served the King of England". "Chinese films, which are backed by economic power, are no longer truly exotic, little known works deserving of advancement. It's a pity that European cinema had no advocate at the Berlinale."

European Film Award

Tadeusz Sobolewski comments on Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck winning the European Film Award for "Das Leben der Anderen": "Almost all the films nominated are set against a background of history, war and terror. But just as the great films of the 'Polish School' were not just reports of historical events, so today's European directors also present the people caught up in events... The course of history does not bypass our cinema. But hopefully the films do not follow the guidelines of an official 'politics of history.' I am not sure if the world is waiting for films about Polish defeats and victories. I am not sure they want to see how heroic we were, and how foreigners betrayed us. It is much more interesting to learn from someone who encountered war, communism or the Solidarnosc Revolution."
