Cannes profiles Hungarian cinema

Kornél Mundruczós' film "Delta" has been invited to participate in this year's Cannes film festival. In an interview with Gyula Varsányi and Géza Csákvári the director comments: "What's important is that people like the film. The choice of Béla Tarr's film [The man from London] last year and my work this year conveys a cultural and political message: it is a confirmation of trust in Hungarian films written and directed by the same person, in keeping with the tradition established by Miklós Jancsó, István Szőts and Pál Fejős. For us this means that tilting at the windmills pays off. Even though there are still those in Hungary who don't like this kind of film, they have firmly established their right to exist."

Sándor Szélesi on the development of science fiction

Sándor Szélesi, who was honoured as best European science fiction author in the autumn of 2007, and who writes under the pseudonym Anthony Sheenard, tells Gyula Varsányi about changes in the genre: "In the USA, science fiction was seen as a branch of popular fiction. However, in the Soviet Union science fiction was used to project the greatness of the future 'socialist person,' through industrialization and technological-scientific development. That's why the state promoted science fiction. And that's why the genre also flourished in Hungary. Today, science fiction is more an intellectual game, a mental adventure that primarily grapples with our fears for the future. I myself concentrate more on people and less on the technological wonders of the future."
