A politically correct Berlinale

For Hanns-Georg Rodek, the panorama at this year's Berlinale film competition was too historical and politically correct. "Virtually every significant historical event of the 20th century was portrayed at this year's Berlinale: the genocide of the Armenians ('The Lark Farm'), Germany's annexation of Czechoslovakia ('I served the King of England'), the concentration camps ('The Counterfeiters'), the Second World War ('Letters from Iwo Jima'), the beginning of the Cold War ('The Good German'), the Cold War ('The Good Shepherd'), the Hungarian uprising (Children of Glory), the South American military dictatorships ('The Year my Parents went on Vacation'), Apartheid ('Goodbye Bafana'), the beginning of the Aids pandemic ('The Witnesses'), the Israeli occupation of Lebanon ('Beaufort'). ... it was history overkill. Historical films often fall victim to the illusion that conveying their message is all they need to do. But that's just part of it, because making a political statement doesn't exempt them from the duty of making an artistic statement, too. Berlin's competitions are increasingly leaving something to be desired in this respect."
