Bronisław Wildstein rejects an EU Charter of Fundamental Rights

Great Britain, Ireland and Poland dismiss the idea of incorporating a legally binding European Charter of Fundamental Rights into the revised EU treaty. In a guest commentary, Polish journalist Bronisław Wildstein explains why he too opposes the idea. "It will be a long time before we have a European nation. Instead, what we have now is an entire library of regulations governing how Europe functions. This tendency follows the trend evident in all modern Western societies toward extending the boundaries of the law. The proponents of this trend see it as an indication of moral and legal progress. In reality it's the reverse. By allowing the law to penetrate areas of life that until now have been governed by customs and morals, we allow it to aid and even bring about their decline."
