Accusations in the Politkovskaya murder case

Reinhard Meier welcomes the Russian prosecutor general's announcement that ten suspects have been arrested in the Anna Politkovskaya murder case but comments critically: "The prosecutor general's statements about who contracted the killing, on the other hand, are highly suspicious. He says that those responsible lived abroad and their intention was to discredit Russia and provoke a domestic crisis... This version fits in perfectly with the Kremlin's emotional propaganda and that of the Kremlin-controlled media. The message Putin and his team are trying to convey through more and less subtle means in the run-up to the parliamentary and presidential elections is that Russia is being threatened and discredited from abroad because it wants to go its own way. According to this scenario the real victim in the Politkovskaya case is Russia - not the tiresome journalists who have attacked the crimes committed in Chechnya and covered up by the Putin regime in countless articles and several books."
