Police protest against Schengen expansion

Yesterday policemen in the German city of Frankfurt (Oder) on the German-Polish border demonstrated against the expansion of the Schengen agreement. Frank Herold criticises the police trade unions' protest: "It's a good sign that only a few policemen responded to the unions' call for protests because its functionaries are playing irresponsibly with the vague concerns of the people and using absurd arguments, despite the fact that they should know better. Although it may not be the best argument, even Wolfgang Schäuble, the minister responsible for law and order, doesn't see the step as a risk. After all, everyone knows that police border controls can't stop terrorists or organised crime. Moreover, it simply isn't true that this change has come all of a sudden. It wasn't a hasty decision and it hasn't come too soon. It is the result of years of work and billions in investment. Therefore there can only be one solution: Open the door!"
