A long way to the West

Six weeks after Serbia's early parliamentary elections, the country has a pro-European government. Nevertheless, the daily die tageszeitung points out, many obstacles still block Serbian membership in the EU. "In Serbia, being pro-European means forgiving the EU states for recognising Kosovo's unlawful declaration of independence, and accepting the EU as a source of funds for Serbia despite this outrageous injustice. ... If Serbia reforms its economy but not its society, it will not be able to become a member of the EU in the foreseeable future. ... The EU has no interest in a second 'Cyprus'. Serbia can reckon with full membership only once its differences with its secessionist province have been resolved. And that will not be possible without facing up to the past. But this process has not even begun in the country, and is impossible with the Socialists in the government."
