Insecurity stalks all of Europe's youth

Journalist Teresa de Sousa stresses the European character of the insecurity phenomenon, and the lack of prospects for young Europeans in general. "This is not simply an Italian or a French reality. We find it everywhere in Europe. It is Spain that invented the 'thousand-euro-a-month generation' formula, despite the accelerated growth of its economy. In Portugal, it is more like the '500-euro-a-month generation'. In practically every European country, there is an alarming differential between the average rate of unemployment among the young and among the rest of the population. Even in the United Kingdom, where the flexibility of the labour market and the dynamism of the service sector keep the spectre of unemployment at bay for the majority of young people, and where it is unthinkable to have to continue living with one's parents, this gap has doubled in size."
