Iran as a nuclear power
"Tehran's announcement might have an appeasing dimension," Alain Lallemand suggests in a lengthy analysis. Ahmadinejad "delivers his address from the same place - Mashad - where he held his first government meeting, as if to signify that this Tuesday one has come full circle, the matter is closed, a political promise has been kept. The nuclear crisis could be closing again, without its nationalistic or rallying dimension." In the journalist's view, "the triumphant tone that Iran has adopted in announcing the news substantiates the argument that a civilian-orientated nuclear program genuinely remains the country's real priority. ... And what if the real objective of Tuesday's jamboree was to garner renewed popularity at home - all the while presenting the IAEA with a 'fait accompli', to be sure - but also to allow for a reshuffling of the cards prior to new negotiations."
