Ciampi will not seek another seven-year term
The president of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, announced on Tuesday, April 18 that he would not seek a second seven-year term, and this despite his high popularity rating. Ciampi, who will turn 86 in December, explained in an interview that seeking a second mandate would amount to instituting a republican monarchy. Federico Geremicca, the daily's deputy editor, pays tribute to this president who knows how "to step down". Few words, but pronounced with a serene soul and free of any ulterior motive. ... Ciampi alluded to his age, that others, through discretion or opportunism, pretended to ignore. On this question, it is possible that the head of state sought to provide an umpteen hint to the country and to his confused and quarrelsome political class that they should focus on renewing and rejuvenating the governing classes... Ciampi has offered fresh proof of his loyalty, wisdom and courage."
