Signs of reason

The left-liberal daily Süddeutsche Zeitung sees Russia's decision not to station missiles in Kaliningrad as a sign of a return to reason and of change: "Both sides are coming to realise that at the moment there are more important things to do than continue the aggressive rhetoric of the past. The economic crisis has laid a heavy burden on America and Russia; these are bad times for expensive and strategically questionable armament projects. ... Russia and the US need each other - this is the pragmatic side of the new friendly dialogue. The changeover in Washington offers the opportunity to sweep away the shards left by the Bush era and improve relations without prejudice. The confrontation of the last few years has wrought much destruction and achieved little. The two new presidents, Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, both know this. Hopefully they won't forget this when the economic crisis passes and Moscow's confidence increases along with the price of oil."
