Protests against Putin's economic policy

The left-liberal Süddeutsche Zeitung comments on the protests against the Russian government's economic policy: "Instead of arming themselves for the future and assisting the middle classes with loans, the Russians sat back and gloated over their oil and gas revenues. Now conditions have worsened and the government must make up for this mistake. But there is also a good side to this development. If Russia wants to restructure its economy in a hurry it will have to open up to the world more quickly than previously. The Russian opposition has not yet been able to profit from the Kremlin's dilemma ... and so the Russian leadership has been able to withstand the first wave of demonstrations. But if the economic crisis continues to worsen, stronger unrest will follow . ... However even that will not deter the president or the prime minister. Their unease will continue to grow, but so will their desire to implement even more draconian controls."
