The domino effect of the "Round Table"
Poland is discussing the importance of the "Round Table" talks at which the representatives of the opposition and the communist dictatorship negotiated the change of system 20 years ago. The liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza comments: "The Table set the first dominos in motion. … Without the Round Table the elections of 4 June [the first semi-democratic elections in Poland] and the victory of [the trade union movement] 'Solidarność' would never have happened. The government of Tadeusz Mazowiecki [the first non-communist prime minister] would never have taken place. Then the Berlin Wall came down and the 'Autumn of Nations' that brought Eastern and Central Europe its freedom began. We were the first. The Poles revere their history which is filled with vain hopes and defeated uprisings. The government side had to break with its totalitarian dogmatism. Today we can celebrate the bloodless victory over the dictatorship. The opposition had to overcome its distrust and run the risk of losing credibility."
