Will a female president enhance women's rights?
The Lithuanian EU Commissioner Dalia Grybauskaitė has declared she is willing to run for the office of president and is currently the favourite. The daily Lietuvos Rytas wonders whether this will have a positive effect on women's rights in the country: "Of course Lithuania is not under sharia law, but it is a long way from the type of equal rights you see in the Nordic countries or in big American cities. Almost every day the police report violence against women, and in the villages most of the hard physical labour is still done by women. And if they manage to escape this lot in the provinces, life in the cities brings with it the twin demands of career and family. ... But Hillary Clinton has encouraged millions of women in the US, and [Barack] Obama millions of blacks. In the same way Dalia Grybauskaitė could be a model for young Lithuanian women and show that the office of president is not just for old men."
