Polish author Andrej Stasiuk notes how devout Poles are taking the German Pope into their hearts. "He could be the first German to become a hero of the masses. Which other Germans have managed to do this before him? Beckenbauer? Schumacher? Beate Uhse? Perhaps, but their popularity was confined to a few fans, and their success was attributed to punctuality, robustness and a steadfast determination to achieve goals – qualities which are regarded as typical of the German people as a whole. They were more like robots, designed for specific purposes. There was nothing human about them, just efficiency, a quality that is not very highly valued by the Slavs. Benedict, on the other hand, is offering the Poles humanity in abundance: firstly, he is John Paul II's successor; secondly, he's the leader of the Catholic Church, and thirdly, he's not very good at Polish yet. Power, modesty and a little imperfection are all united in his person."
