Cristian Pirvulescu wants a new beginning for European democracy
With an eye to the upcoming European Parliament elections Romanian political scientist Cristian Pirvulescu reflects on the democratisation of Europe's mindset. "European democracy needs a new beginning. It seems the consecutive 'nos' of the French and the Dutch in 2005 and that of the Irish in 2008 in the referendums on the 'constitutionalisation' of Europe were not enough. It took the traumatic experience of the Czech EU presidency to prove that things cannot go on as they are. This is not about the Czech failure but the fact that the vision on the basis of which Europe was to have been constructed lacks the democratic component. It's not that there were no ties with democracy, but they were of a formal nature. They lacked structure: they were a kind of enforced exercise. Democracy was only a prerequisite, and not even obligatory for economic development. All that counted in Europe was the economy in a free and deregulated market. … Since the economic crisis took hold we know that either we democratise Europe now or it will never be democratised."
