Things continue beyond the horizon

The EU eastward enlargement of five years ago bears historical responsibility for the entire continent, writes the daily Der Tagesspiegel: "The enlargement of the Union to the East was meant to bolster economically what had previously been secured through the Nato enlargement. Russia was quick to perceive both moves as a threat. But it has now understood the economic advantages for its own country, because the growing prosperity in Central and Eastern Europe has naturally strengthened the flow of trade to and from Russia. Leaving aside the question of Croatia, there is now almost no support within the populations of most EU states for a renewed expansion. However hardly anyone doubts that things will continue beyond the horizon, and that economic or even association agreements with Belarus, Ukraine and George will be the next - if not the last - steps."
