Romania has become a telecracy
In Romania the media is increasingly deciding the fate of politicians. Tom Gallagher comments on the excessive power of television in the daily Romania Libera: "Romania has witnessed the rise of what might be called the telecracy. So powerful is the hold exercised over the mind and emotions of the viewers by media technologists that the electorate has effectively mounted a coup d'etat against itself. Sedated by an ocean of nightly trivia, they have become addicted to non-issues that have no relevance to the state of their own lives. If [former communist dictator Nicolae] Ceasuescu had been able to invade the home so effectively ... his regime might have been renowned for its pacific character."
