A relaxed changeover of power in Macedonia

The conservative "Alliance for a better Macedonia" led by Nikola Gruevski won the July 5 elections in Macedonia and is likely to form a coalition with the Albanian party DPA to replace the current social democratic government. Erich Rathfelder sees the composure with which this changeover of power is taking place as a positive sign: "Macedonia can regard itself as exemplary in that its political constellation combines both ethnically and politically oriented parties. Like his predecessors, Gruevski will adhere to the EU's standards to achieve stability in this multi-ethnic state and continue with the economic and judicial reforms. And this is the way it should be. To act against the interests of the EU is no longer an option; nationalist attitudes are only counterproductive. Gruevski understood this even before the elections and reigned in the hotheads in his party."
