The "Forced destinies" exhibition on mass expulsions

After much controversy the 'Gezwungene Wege' (Forced Destinies) exhibition organised by the Centre Against Expulsion opened yesterday in Berlin. Sonja Zekri admits the exhibition has proven very educational for her. "There were the Karelians who suffered at the hands of Hitler, Stalin and the Finnish government; the Baltic peoples, the Greeks and Turkish Cypriots. Oh yes, there was plenty to discover at this exhibition. But the exhibition's indisputably pan-European approach is the product only of a new, softer approach and not a fundamental change of attitude. This is evident in small details – lacking connections and small gaps in information. The exhibition describes the German crimes in detail. The Hitler-Stalin pact, the destruction of government structures, the annihilation of the Polish secret service are all portrayed with admirable clarity. But it's as if these crimes had nothing to do with the expulsion of the Germans."
