Swine flu reaches Europe
The swine flu has arrived in Europe. One young man in Spain has fallen ill with the disease, and two additional cases were confirmed in Scotland on Monday. Numerous people are infected with the virus, all of whom recently spent time in Mexico, sources say.
The Times - Wielka Brytania
After the first case of swine flu has been confirmed in the UK, The Times investigates possible countermeasures: "The Health Secretary, Alan Johnson, has said that the NHS has a stockpile of more than 500 million pounds worth of the Tamiflu antiviral drug which, in the absence of a vaccine, is the best that science can do. Mr Johnson also pointed out that existing EU rules prevent the import of all live pigs and pig meat from Mexico. A test on a Canadian woman in Greater Manchester turned out to be negative. But two cases have already been confirmed in Airdrie in Scotland. Public concern is natural. For the moment, we can do no better than follow the rather homely advice of the Health Protection Agency: people should cover their nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, throw away dirty tissues promptly and wash hands and surfaces that are regularly touched." El Mundo - Hiszpania
After a case of swine flu was announced in Spain, the daily El Mundo writes: "The [Mexican] government ordered yesterday that schools be closed down and gatherings prevented, which has led to an economic standstill in the country. Will it come to this in Europe, and more specifically in Spain? Until now the health authorities have been careful, warning that measures should be taken to avoid such a scenario. But the risk remains. What the governments are doing is to isolate suspicious cases to prevent the virus from spreading. The EU Commissioner for Health [Androulla Vassiliou] suggested yesterday that flights to the US and Mexico should be suspended. But the European Commission and the governments have dismissed this possibility, doubtless to avoid a clash with the Obama government." (28/04/2009)

La Stampa - Włochy
After the first cases of swine flu have been detected in Spain and the UK, the liberal daily La Stampa draws parallels between the spreading virus and the global economic crisis: "The first thing the two have in common is that there is no vaccination against the disease and no effective formula for curtailing the damages caused by the failure of subprime loans. The second feature they share is the quick mutation of the catalyst: we've already been told that the real danger is not the virus in its current form, but the high probability of more severe and more aggressive forms." Corriere del Ticino - Szwajcaria
The daily Corriere del Ticino analyses the swine flu from an ideological point of view: "Yesterday an official observer joked that Arab countries would not be affected by the virus because Muslims don't eat pork. … We can be sure that in certain areas of the planet - in a climate of clashing cultures - a similar thesis could apply as follows: God, or nature, is punishing mankind for eating impure animals. A food apocalypse will triumph where international terrorism failed. A slice of salami will be the death of the West. Then there will be those … who interpret the swine epidemic as an anti-Western plot. … This ideological explanation for swine flu, albeit utterly preposterous, could prove tenable at a symbolic level. … It could indeed be a just punishment for the rich countries to fall victim to … their own greed. For those who believe in the clash of the cultures a conspiracy in which a foodstuff that is symbolic of our society is poisoned by the 'enemies' would be absolutely plausible." (28/04/2009)

Postimees - Estonia
The daily Postimees seeks help from home remedies against the swine flu: "Old country lore has already helped us out with our financial problems. We should now remember these clever old sayings when preparing to meet the flu threat. They're basically very simple: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and in comparison to the flu the smell of garlic and freshly cut onions is no doubt the lesser evil. And is it really necessary to fly to overcrowded southern destinations this summer? Now would really be a good time to make the most of our own wonderful and what's more inexpensive beaches."
